29 ژانویه 2016

Researchers at Faculty of Pharmacy in Mashhad University of Medical Sciences have proved the healing properties of saffron mentioned in Avicenna’s book. To carry out this study, which has been published in the high-profile scientific magazine Fhythotherapy Research, Dr. Hossein Hosseinzadeh, a board professor, and his colleague, Dr. Marjan Nasiri Asl had a profound study of over 80 books and articles among which there was the second volume of Avicenna’s The Canon of Medicine.

In this study it has been mentioned that saffron, which is referred to the stigma of this plant, contains carotenoids (crocin, crocetins: carotene lycopene-a), picrocrocin and saffronal, and also flavonoids.

In alternative medicine, this spice is believed to be antipyretic, expectorant, and it can stimulate women’s periods, the feeling of delight, and the sexual desire. The other healing properties of this plant in alternative medicine have been clearly explained in the study.

In the main body of this research, the various properties of saffron claimed by Avicenna have been documented by high-profile articles from the world of science.

One of this properties mentioned in The Canon of Medicine is its dietary use which has been proved by clinical tests.

According to this book, saffron is capable of healing otitis (inflammation of the ear) and conjunctivitis (inflammation of the eye), which has been proved by tests on animals.

Saffron is also believed to create feelings of joy and delight, and its being antidepressant had been tested on both animals and humans. The effects have been the same as those of other antidepressants such as Imipramine and Fluoxetine.

Additionally, it has been mentioned that saffron contains materials capable of improving the eyesight. It has been recorded in clinical tests that it can also cure eyestrain and macular degeneration.

According to this book, saffron and its oil in particular can ease breathing and improve the respiratory system. It has also been reported that saffron has the effects of a bronchodilator.

Avicenna in his book, The Canon of Medicine, has referred to saffron as diuretic and a stimulant to the sexual desire. These effects have also been found in tests on both animals and humans.

Based on this book, saffron is beneficial for menstrual cramps and childbirth. According to clinical experiments, saffron can also treat painful periods and premenstrual syndrome.

This book refers to saffron as an emetic. It is also beneficial to the stomach and the liver. According to scientific studies, saffron can decrease the appetite, and the regular consumption of 180 ml of its essence during 8 weeks can result in light weight loss.

In addition, this book claims that saffron heals infections. Microbial tests have shown that saffron containing crocin and saffronal can fight against Escherichia, Salmonella, and Candida.

Ahmad Haji Sharifi (Attar Esfahani) in his book, The Secrets of Medicinal Plants, speaks of saffron as the following:
